Moments In Oblivion

My Review:

Rating: 4 Stars ✰✰✰✰

Moments In Oblivion by Yolanda Olson is just that, defining moments in the lives and/or deaths of the characters in each story.

Each chapter in this book was its own short story and in true Yolanda style, not all is what it seems.

It didn’t take me long to figure out that something wasn’t quite right in the first story, As Sadie Sleeps. Sadie is a sick little girl and her mom will go to Hell and back to get her the help that she needs.

The story, Dead Zones Are Arbitrary asks the question, “how far and fast will you travel to outrun your demons?”

Skin is the third story in the book and well all I can say is the title speaks for itself and be careful how you treat people.

Out of all the stories in this book though, A Day in the Death was my favorite. It had a perfect balance of intrigue, gore, suspense, and that unique twist that let’s you know you are reading a Yolanda Olson book. Men, beware of how you treat the women in your life. Some of them like their revenge served bloody.

This book was a bit lighter on the gore then many of Yolanda’s books are, however the plots are still pretty gruesome so beware of reading if you have a weak stomach.

My Review:

Rating: 5 Star ✰✰✰✰✰

Dirty Bird by H.Q. Frost and M. Piper is the second book in the Caged Series. It picks up right where Little Bird, book one in the series left off. You will want to read book one first.

If you have a weak stomach for graphic violence then this book is not for you. Lucas has built an empire for himself. Jasper is the face of that empire. Both men are obsessed with Megan Porter. That obsession has led them to kidnapping her.

Locked in a basement in Lucas’s mansion, Megan is desperate to get out and seek her revenge on the men who put her there. But she can’t help how her body reacts to one man in particular, Lucas.

Lucas has a plan. Keep Megan locked in the basement and slowly break her so that she’ll never want to leave him. But he soon learns the hard way that plans don’t always work out when two other men show up as competition. One, the man he calls brother, Jasper. The other, Ben Vig, her arranged fiancé.

What these men don’t know is that Megan has a plan of her own and no man will ever break her.

I’m not gonna lie. There were parts of this book that made my skin crawl, but I couldn’t stop reading it.

The first book ended with such a twist that I had to know what happened in this book. I ended up reading it all in one day.

These characters in this book are not good people in any way. Yet you can’t help to love them all, with the exception of Jasper. That man is just rotten to the core. The things he does to Megan would break a lesser woman. I get shivers just thinking about it.

Megan isn’t exactly the victim either. She is a cold hearted woman with a few soft spots. I couldn’t help admiring her determination. She wasn’t going to give those men what they wanted no matter what they did to her.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for a strong female lead, even if she isn’t very likable.

This book will leave you wondering who will be the victor until the very twisted end!

My Review:

Rating: 4 Stars ✰✰✰✰

I’m not exactly sure what I was expecting when I bought You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero. I was a new coach, learning how to grow my business and this book kept popping up on my newsfeed. Needles to say the title of the book spoke volumes to my inner badass.

When I first started reading the book, I wasn’t exactly impressed. It was a whole lot of cussing and trying to sound cool. Like a preteen/teenager who is learning how to use her “big girl” words and thinks they make her sound more like an adult when really she just sounds ridiculous.

As I continued to read the book, it began to sound even more hokey. The author kept talking about connecting to Source Energy and using it to increase your frequency.

I found it all very humorous, but I knew there was a message to find. And find it I did!

The message of the book is that you get from the universe exactly what you put into it. In other words, if you are positive minded, even in times of struggle, things will work themselves out. It also carries the message to love yourself and give yourself grace.

It delivers this message while also allowing that we will all have bad days and moments of weakness.

By the end of the book I felt that I had learned a very valuable life lesson and I would even go so far as to credit having read this book with helping me stay positive during the stressful process of looking for a new job.

This is a great book for someone who is looking for a more positive outlook on life.

Grit Teaser

My Review:

Rating: 3 Stars ✰✰✰

Grit by J.M Walker is the first book in her King’s Harlots MC Series. Worlds collide in this biker meets military romance.

I love books that have a strong female lead in them and you don’t get much more badass then a female biker club.

Jay isn’t the type of woman to be told she can’t do something. When she was warned that an all female MC would never make it, she had to prove them wrong. Being the president of the King’s Harlots means constantly putting on a strong front and lately Jay isn’t feeling so strong.

Then Angel walks into her life. Construction business owner by day, Seal by night. He is starting to feel that there is something missing. Then he finds Jay and everything changes. That man likes to give orders and Jay just loves to submit to him. It made for some H-O-T love scenes!

There is a string of women going missing and Jay and Angel join forces to find the missing women and Jay’s twin sister who was taken over 2 years ago.

As I said earlier, I love a strong female lead. So I was excited when I learned that this was about a female biker club. Jay and her girls kind of had a revolving door or strength and weaknesses. They didn’t posses quite the “grit” that I was expecting in tough biker chicks. Having said that though, the girls were completely relatable. Under the circumstances of the story, I could understand why they would eventually show weakness.

The writing in the story was both good and bad. What I mean by that is each individual sections was well written, but transitions between each scene were almost nonexistent which made the story not flow well in my opinion. There were also quite a few gaps in the storyline that left me with several questions.

Was the construction crew for real or was it just a front? If it was a front, what was the reason for them working on the club? Why was Tyler so worried about Jay looking into the missing women? Aside from talking about the missing women and reading news articles on them, what exactly was the club doing to find the missing women?

I may not have found the answer to most of my questions by the end of the book, but I have to say that sticking it out to the end was pretty well worth it. The action in the end of the book was intense and I was honestly surprised by who the bad guy really was. Also I know the storyline continues through the next books in the series so there is a good chance that my questions might be answered then.

Forbidden Fate

My Review:

Rating: 4 Stars ✰✰✰✰

When I started reading Forbidden Fate by Mia Pride, I wasn’t sure if I would like it. Historical romance isn’t really my taste but I’ve been trying to expand my reading horizons. I think I picked a good book to do just that.

In the beginning, I was a little lost and it was slow going. But as I continued into the adventures of Gwynn, Liam, and their friends, I found myself looking forward to the next time I could pick up my kindle and dive in.

Gwynn has no memory of who she is or how she wound up unconscious on the beach below the cliffs. All she knows is the handsome stranger Liam who rescued her. She has started having nightmares and fears that they might be the answer to how she ended up that way.

As the story progresses, Gwynn learns several truths. Her life before the amnesia isn’t one she wants to return to, but she isn’t sure if she can have a life with her love. She also learns of a family that she never knew existed and that she may just be part of a prophecy that is currently unfolding.

Once I warmed up to this story, I found myself extremely invested in the characters. I wanted to see Liam and Gwynn find their happily ever after. Especially after all they had been through to get their. I was praying they would get out of their own ways and see things for how they could be.

I also loved meeting their friends along the way. Duncan has a solid place in my heart. He was a trusty sidekick. So were Ceara, Abigael, and Garreth. I can’t wait to see more of them in the next books in the series.

Towards the end, I even found myself feeling a little bad for Baine after learning how Gwynn’s choices and his own lead him to become the person he was.

Having never read one of Mia Pride’s books, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What I wasn’t prepared for were the horrible tortures Gwynn’s ex put her through. I was amazed at how resilient she was and her ability to bounce back even as her memories returned and still have the ability to love and find humor in life.

I felt so bad for Liam as she kept turning him down of slights she felt he had committed against her. It was completely unrealistic expectations from her and yet so true to how women sometimes act towards men. It made me laugh to myself as I was reading it, even while I sympathized with him.

The writing of this story was on point. The pace was steady with just enough action, comedy, drama, seriousness, and romance to keep the story interesting and balanced. I’m looking forward to seeing where their adventures take them next.

Title: Charged

Author: Kerri Ann

Genre: Romance/Action/Adventure

Release Date: August 8, 2016

Synopsis:

Ryker – the sexiest man I have ever laid eyes on. Figures he’d be a total manwhore. But he is the man that is going to fix my car, allowing me to escape before the mob catches up with me. I just need to keep my hormones in check while he does.

I’ve never had an issue finding a woman to fill my bed. Hell, it didn’t even have to be a bed. Back alley, the seedy bathroom in a bar, the bed of a truck in broad daylight. You name it, I’ve done it. But when Kate steps out of that tow truck, I’m hooked. She rattles my nerves, causing me to lose all sense of self control.

What is she hiding though?

My Review:

Rating: ✰✰✰

Kate is on the run when her old junker of a car breaks down. Unfortunately for her she’s out in the middle of nowhere and now dependent on the seriously hot, bad boy Ryker to get it fixed so she can get out of there and disappear once again.

There are two problems with that plan……

The first problem, getting to know the people of the town has left her not wanting to leave. The second problem, her mechanic, the man she desperately wants to go to bed with has ties with the very people she is trying to get away from.

I have to say that if you are looking for a hot bad boy book with lots of action in it, this is probably the book for you. But if you are squeamish about certain issues like assault, you may want to stay clear. There are some pretty disturbing scenes in parts of the book.

I liked the story as a whole. The writing was good and there was a good balance between action, drama, comedy, hot scenes to keep me reading. However, the ending of the story was just a little over the top for my tastes. Had it not been for that, I would have given the book a solid 4-4.5 stars.

Keep in mind though that that is just my taste in books and has nothing to do with the actual writing of the author in this book. In other words, read it for yourself to find out if you agree with me or not.

Synopsis:

And as the Goddess of Night unleashes an unparalleled wave of fury across the realms, Allie’s dream of a peaceful future with her favorite protector all but disappears. Nott’s determined to control Midgard. But Allie has more to fight for than ever before, and she’s determined to end the Night War . . . no matter what it costs her.

My Review:

Rating: 5 Stars ✰✰✰✰✰

The Night War Series by Leia Stone and S.T. Bende is one of my favorite young adult series. It’s clean and refreshing while not skimping on the danger and hardships faced by Allie and her protectors as they fight Nott, the Night Goddess.

Redeemer is the last book in this three book series which should be read in order. If you haven’t read Protector or Defender, you can grab your copy of each by clicking on their title.

The quest to find the 3 remaining pieces of Allie’s weapon continues and the stakes continue to rise. With each new piece found, Nott’s rage increases making the story line in this book one of the darkest in the series.

Lives are lost, truths are revealed, and roles change as this story unfolds, yet the characters still find time to goof off, laugh, have fun, and find love. I found myself alternating between laughing my butt off and crying my heart out.

Allie has a big decision to make. Does Nott need to be destroyed or can she be redeemed?

CowSex

Title: CowSex

Author: Lesley Jones

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Release Date: September 28, 2017

CowSex

Synopsis:

If you add two strangers to a cabin, in the middle of a snowstorm, the obvious is bound to happen… CowSex.

When Essex lifestyle blogger and fashionista, Gracie Elliott crash lands into the life of Colorado mountain man Koa Carmichael, fists, chemistry and sexual banter ensue.

After the punk rock Tinker Bell and semi-retired country rock star share some sweet, emotional as well as laugh-out-loud moments, they find it impossible to deny that they might have just discovered what neither of them knew they were looking for.

CowSex, sometimes all you need is a little bit.

My Review:

Rating: 4 Stars ✰✰✰✰

What happens when a girl from Essex and a cowboy from Colorado are thrown together? CowSex! Lesley Jones wrote one heck of a funny book when she wrote Cowsex.

At first I was very hesitant to read this book, but it was recommended to me by a friend so I decided to give it a go. It was definitely worth the read.

Gracie has just ended things with her long time boyfriend and decides she needs a change of scenery. So she rents a cabin in Colorado and hops on a plane. When she gets there, to her surprise, there is someone already staying at the cabin. A tall, dark, and handsome someone who happens to own it.

The Colorado winter weather, has them both stuck together and neither one are happy about it at first, but it doesn’t take long for a chemistry to develop between the two.

Gracie has a mouth on her that left me laughing my butt off throughout the majority of the book. If it wasn’t her mouth that had me rolling, it was the awkward situations the two of them constantly found themselves in.

Don’t worry everyone, there was no CowSex. There was plenty heat going on between the two humans though so grab your lasso, shout yee-haw and get ready to laugh till you cry.

Where Sleeping Gods Lie

Title: Where Sleeping Gods Lie

Author: Yolanda Olson

Genre: Horror/Thriller/Erotica

Release Date: May 6, 2017

Where Sleeping Gods Lie

Synopsis:

Content Advisory: The following story contains scenes of a graphic nature. These scenes are horrific and sexual acts that are occurring. Bloody goodness and dirty, vicious boys lie ahead. You’ve been warned.

Logic tells us that when we reach the end of something, we stop.

Life is a game, a book; everything has an ending, but what if the end is just the beginning? My end came a long time ago and I hope you’ll understand why I can begin again at that exact moment.

There are reasons these things happen. I’m not entirely sure what they all are, and I can name a certain few, but that would defeat the purpose of figuring it out. Everything should begin as a clean slate and end in flames. Nothing is salvageable if you really open your eyes and look at this putrid world. I was once taught that everyone deserves a second chance, everyone is wonderful in their own way, and everyone finds happiness.

I used to believe that because I had found my happiness. My sliver of sunshine on a rainy day. My cool, calm in the raging fires that spoke softly enough to quiet my malicious thoughts.

But there are only so many times you can roll the dice before you keep ending up with the same numbers.

My Review:

Rating: 4 Stars ✰✰✰✰

Where Sleeping Gods Lie by Yolanda Olson has to be on of my top 3 favorites that she has written. It doesn’t rely on gore as much as many of her other stories do, however if you have every read a book by Yolanda, you know there is going to be a catch in the end.

When first getting to know Fai and Koval, they seem like your normal couple who like spicing things up every now and then by adding a third. That’s where Angie comes in. However, things take a wrong turn when a drunk Angie says all the wrong things and sends Koval into a downward spiral.

In an effort to save Koval from himself, Fai gets Angie to take him across the border to their secluded cabin. Angie is hell bent on making it up to the two men in any way she can. That was her first mistake.

I spent the whole book falling in love with Fai and Koval. I felt that Koval was full of angst and had major issues, while Fai fought to  keep him balanced. It’s this reason that I never would have guessed the ending.

Technically this book would be considered a horror, but honestly it doesn’t read that way. More like a suspense. You know something is going to go terribly wrong, but you don’t know when or how.

That’s all I can say without giving away the ending. So you’ll just have to read it for yourself.

Review:

Rating: 5 Stars ✰✰✰✰✰

Phaelyn is book 2.5 in The Dark Shadows series by Ariel Marie. It is a short novella that can be read as a stand alone book.

Phaelyn is the only female in the Dark Shadows. She was once a human and was turned by her friend Nadira, the vampire princess, after being attacked by a rogue vampire in the woods outside her childhood home.

Idris is one of the royal guards. He was charged with keeping Watch over Anika, Nadira’s best friend and Toma’s fated mate, but he failed and they both ended up being taken by the necromancers. He knows it’s only a matter of time before the Dark Shadows find where they are hiding him.

Phaelyn is on the team sent to free Idris. When things don’t go quite as planned, they find themselves alone in a cabin for the night. Will they finally admit to the feelings they both have for each other?

This was a nice short read! It tied up some of the loose ends from Toma and Anikas story and also gives you a look into how Phaelyn came to be the only female in the Dark Shadows. Both Phaelyn and Idris are strong alpha characters. Idris has always had feelings for her but never acted on them. It wasn’t until they were alone that they realized that it was maybe more. There are a few dark moments in this book when Zoreal, the necromancer who tortured Idris, couldn’t handle losing and decides he needs some revenge. But don’t worry, there is plenty of HOTNESS to balance things out. It is another great book to continue this series.
